Matagorda County adopts 2026 budget and ratifies $8.2 million property tax increase

Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman and the Commissioners' Court adopted the county's 2026 budget and approved property tax rates during a regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 25, 2025, in Bay City.
The court adopted the 2025 Proposed Maintenance & Operation rate of 0.32920 and the 2025 Proposed Interest & Sinking rate of 0.00731 for a total tax rate of 0.33651, and ratified a property tax increase of $8,225,523 (31.11%) as reflected in the adopted 2026 budget. The votes on the budget and the tax-rate actions were unanimous.
Commissioner Edward "Bubba" Cook moved to approve and adopt the 2026 Matagorda County Budget; Commissioner Charles "Bubba" Frick seconded the motion, which carried with all members concurring. The court briefly held a public hearing on the proposed tax rates before returning to open session and taking the rate votes.
The minutes record the adoption of the Maintenance & Operation and Interest & Sinking rates separately, with motions recorded and the court's record showing five ayes and zero nays on each measure.
In addition to the budget and tax votes, the court approved routine fiscal items during the session, including line-item transfers and emergency amendments, all by unanimous consent.
The court adjourned at approximately 10:58 a.m.
