City Manager Bennett updated the Grand Junction City Council that ongoing discussions with event owner Air Race X have shifted to a model led by the Grand Junction Sports Commission and its executive director, Ben Snyder.
Bennett said staff and the sports commission met with Air Race X and that the organizers are developing a new model under which the sports commission would manage event requests, including any use of lodging-tax revenue. "The original proposal that they gave to the city is no longer necessarily on the table," Bennett said, adding more information will be shared as the sports commission and Air Race X continue discussions.
Bennett emphasized that, at present, there is no new direct request to the city for lodging-tax funds and that the sports commission would be the entity to weigh such requests. Councilmembers voiced support for the sports commission’s leading role and said the arrangement feels more appropriate than direct city management of the event.
Representative quote: "They are re-looking at a new model with the sports commission," Bennett said.
Next steps: Staff will keep council updated as the sports commission and Air Race X refine their model and any formal requests that might require council consideration.
