The commissioners voted to renew the county's contract with PermaCare (presented by Chris Barnhill, CEO) to continue the mental-health deputy program for the 2026 contract year and to provide funding for two mental-health deputy officers already negotiated in prior amendments.
County staff explained the grant supporting the co-responder program totals about $472,009.48; the court approved an initial budget amendment of $196,033.47 to purchase vehicles now and a separate $33,447 amendment to move grant revenue into the law-enforcement supplies account. Staff said the remaining grant funds (about $243,005.01) will be presented and amended into the budget at the next commissioner's court meeting.
Barnhill described the program as a continuation of the historic mental-health deputy approach and confirmed the extension maintains existing program elements and funding for two deputies. Commissioners approved the county judge and sheriff to sign the renewal contract.
The motions passed on voice votes with no recorded roll-call in the transcript.
