"My name is Alexis Thomas. I'm the founder of the Battle Grounds Foundation," Thomas said during the public-comment portion of the work session, describing free weekend activities that include bowling, fishing and supervised events aimed at keeping teens engaged and reducing violence. Thomas said her group focuses on Friday and Saturday nights when the council has said most violent incidents occur.
Thomas said the foundation is registered with the city and holds 501(c)(3) status. She said the organization is located at 859 Clayton Street and that $15,000 would help pay for supplies and buses to pick up youths whose parents work overnight shifts. Council members and staff thanked Thomas and invited follow-up conversation during budget season.
Thomas also said the foundation has worked with off-duty police officers at outings to build positive relationships between young people and officers. The council encouraged her to seek county-level support as well and said staff would consider the request during budget deliberations.
