The Midland County Commissioners Court on May 20 approved proposed pay adjustments for sheriff deputies and record specialists intended to retain recent cadet graduates and address staffing shortages.
Sheriff (speaker 15) told commissioners he expected two cadets to graduate this week and said past losses of recruits to neighboring agencies were driven by pay differences. He asked for a separate pay schedule for law‑enforcement positions to keep the county competitive. "This will allow us to be competitive with all the agencies in the county," the sheriff said when describing the intent of the proposal.
Commissioners questioned whether changes to the county’s step‑and‑grade system should be handled through the annual budget process and asked the sheriff to provide current step/grade numbers to map raises onto existing pay grids. County staff agreed to provide numbers; commissioners ultimately approved the raises as presented and then separately approved raises for record specialists with an effective date of the meeting.
Motions were made, seconded, and approved by voice vote; the court recorded no roll‑call tallies in the transcript. Staff were directed to reconcile the approved increases with the county’s pay system and to return documentation that records the adjustments.
