Child protection court judge requests $200,000; commissioners move contingency funds

Robin Griffith (S13), the county’s child protection court judge, told commissioners that attorney invoices arrived late and that increased billing rates have raised costs in her court. She said the court had budgeted $200,000 for attorney fees but had already spent $124,000 through January and needed an additional $200,000 to cover anticipated bills.
"I failed to anticipate that a lot of my attorneys had not submitted a bill for many months, and they submitted them at the end of the year, which bumped it into this year," Griffith said. She told the court she will increase oversight of attorney billing and review invoices more frequently to limit future surprises.
Commissioner S1 moved to transfer $200,000 from contingency into the child protection court attorney account; S1’s motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Griffith thanked the court and said she will monitor billing practices and report back in future budget discussions.
