At a special-call meeting, the Cullman City Council adopted a contract with SimpleGrants to prepare an application for the U.S. Department of TransportationSafe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program and authorized the mayor to submit the application.
The chair said the SS4A program requires communities to develop a safety plan as the first phase and that the grant opportunity was announced late, prompting the special meeting so the city could meet the May 26, 2026 submission deadline. "We thought it would be prudent for our community to go ahead and look at writing the grant," the chair said, explaining the contract will provide grant writing and application assistance.
Under Resolution 26-92 the council voted to enter the contract with SimpleGrants; under Resolution 26-93 the council authorized the mayor to submit the SS4A application. A council member moved to adopt each item and another seconded; both motions were approved by voice vote with no opposition recorded. The chair said staff will compile publicly available data and attempt to submit the application by the end of the week; the council will form a committee if the grant is awarded to coordinate public safety and other city departments.
The chair described SS4A as a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation that supports projects to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. The chair stated that "several billion dollars have been awarded through these grants to communities," a characterization made in the meeting and not independently verified in the transcript. The chair also misspoke once while naming the administering agency and corrected the reference to the U.S. Department of Transportation during remarks.
No public comments or committee reports were recorded at the special meeting. The council announced its next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 7 p.m. The meeting then adjourned.
