Students from Leadership HT presented two community projects to the council on April 14: a proposal to install black posts and decorative chains along Husky Parkway to replace temporary orange barrels used for event traffic control, and a separate proposal to add string lighting, fans and picnic seating at The Mall pavilion.
The students told the council Public Works currently spends more than $20,000 a year to install and remove weighted orange barrels for about 22 events at Husky Stadium. They provided two installation estimates; the lower estimate cited was $51,000. The second student group said the Mall-pavilion upgrades would cost about $1,300 and that they would fund that work themselves; they also said Parks & Recreation and Director Chris Mills had endorsed the plan. Councilors asked about maintenance and the posts’ material but did not pledge city funding.
Councilors praised the students’ initiative and encouraged follow-up with Public Works and Parks & Recreation; no formal action or spending commitment was made at the April 14 meeting.
