A former educator asked the Nottoway County Board of Supervisors on May 14 for permission to use the Burkeville gymnasium for a youth basketball summer camp that would combine sports with reading and math remediation.
The presenter, who identified herself as a retired educator and volunteer organizer, said the program would include background-checked volunteers, required parent waivers and insurance naming the county. She proposed evening and weekend hours for children ages roughly 5 to 17 and emphasized affordability and mentorship.
Board members confirmed the county received title of the facility from the school division earlier this year and reminded the presenter that users are expected to contribute to utility and maintenance costs. Supervisors asked the organizer to work with County Administrator Bowen and facilities staff to provide a proposed schedule, a per-use or per-participant fee, and proof of insurance and background checks.
Maintenance manager David Redford, present at the meeting, noted recent floor repairs to the gym and praised the idea of increased year-round use. The board welcomed the proposal and asked staff to return details to the board for final approval of terms.
