Van Zandt County commissioners approve several measures, agree to publish redacted binders and table Chapter 391 resolution

Commissioner Curtis made the motion to table. - Authorized termination of two long-standing VHF tower leases (Titan Towers LP and Crossroads Communications) after staff said the county has migrated to a P25 digital radio system; the judge said 90-day notices would be sent and the county expects roughly $1,000 per month in savings by ending the leases. - Approved renewal of a pager-service contract with Mobile Communication Services for 2026'1, at about $13,900—4,000 annually, to preserve notification capability for volunteer firefighters where cell coverage is unreliable. - Approved a lease with Texas CellNet for space on a precinct tower at a reported $1,500 per month to offset tower costs. - Approved several land-use items: Christy's Place subdivision plat (Precinct 1) and The Reserve at Canton subdivision (Precinct 4, 26 lots) with a 24-month infrastructure completion requirement; the Edgewood Acres application in Precinct 3 was withdrawn and treated as denied. - Approved a $4,450 budget amendment from contingency to the auditor's office for training and reconciliation work and passed routine consent-agenda items.
Public comment included a request from Steve Horowitz that the court publish redacted binders two days before meetings to help the public prepare and ask informed questions. The court also heard a public presentation about severe drainage and silt buildup at the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial and directed staff to investigate rights and options for remediation.
What happens next: The binder-publication process will move forward with a Monday publication of available materials; commissioners directed additional policy work and staff training to manage redaction and deadlines. The Chapter 391 resolution will return to the court agenda on June 3 for further consideration.
