Chief Equity Officer Dr. C.J. Akins outlined the committee’s composition and naming criteria, noting public input sessions and an online portal that ran from March to April 2026. Staff reported receiving 76 recommendations (59 distinct suggestions). The names with more than one recommendation included "Woodbridge Elementary School," "Potomac View Elementary School," "Shabazzie Elementary School," "Zela Brown Elementary School," "Barack Obama Elementary School," "Longview Elementary School," and others. The naming committee also followed Policy 854 and consulted the Prince William County Historical Commission; meeting minutes showed no objections raised by the commission on May 12.
The naming presentation was informational; staff said the board will take final action on the school name at its June 3 meeting and invited public comment at that session.
