PWCS to block YouTube on district devices next year, superintendent says

Prince William County Public Schools announced on May 20 that beginning in the 2026–27 school year students will not be able to access YouTube directly on district-issued devices, either at school or at home.
"Students will no longer be able to access YouTube directly on their PWCS-issued devices both in school and at home," Superintendent Dr. McDade said during superintendent’s time, explaining the change is intended to reduce exposure to unpredictable and inappropriate content and to better support classroom engagement and responsible digital citizenship.
The district said the change includes both youtube.com and the YouTube app and that the decision follows input from teachers about classroom disruptions and content concerns. Staff emphasized that while online video can be valuable, YouTube’s platform does not reliably allow the district to restrict viewing to a single approved video.
PWCS officials said technology regulations will be updated iteratively and the division will provide additional information to families and staff about alternative vetted instructional video resources and how teachers can request specific video content for instruction.
