Gadsden City honors Scholar Bowl champions and boys varsity soccer team

Colonel Wayne Davenport, scholar bowl coach, told the council the program captured its third straight state championship and noted the district’s rare feat of elementary, middle and high school champions in the same year. "This year is our third in a row state championship in high school Scholar Bowl," Davenport said, noting national championship competition in June.
Mayor Ford and council members congratulated the students and coaches and described the teams’ practice and preparation routines. Coach Corker introduced the soccer roster and summarized a season that included multiple overtime victories and a double-overtime final; council members praised players and coaches and invited teams to take a photo with elected officials.
Council members and city staff highlighted the teams as examples of community investment and youth development. The mayor also noted the visible diversity in the stands and the role of families in supporting the teams.
What happens next: The scholar bowl team is scheduled to compete at nationals in June; the city will continue to recognize student accomplishments and support youth programs through recreation and education initiatives.
