Nemaha County delays decision on employee health plan after 14.65% Blue Cross increase

Tim McGonigal of the Nebraska Association of County Officials told commissioners the Blue Cross/Blue Shield rate proposal for Nemaha County shows a 14.65% increase compared with current rates. McGonigal said NACO obtained a competing quote from Medica Choice National that offered a comparable plan design (deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and prescription drug copays).
Commissioners did not select a plan on May 20. The board will review the competing quotes and decide at its next meeting on June 2, 2026. That vote will determine the county’s health and dental plan choice for employees and affect county budget planning.
The presentation was informational; no formal procurement or contract award was recorded in the May 20 minutes. Commissioners listed the insurance rate discussion among items to be resolved at the June 2 meeting.
