Trustee Hammersmith highlights volunteer outreach, holiday decorations and proposed trail signage

Trustee Jessie Hammersmith told the Village of Lombard Board of Trustees on Jan. 22 that community engagement is growing and that the Community Relations Committee’s first meeting of the year had strong attendance and “a really good discourse” with residents.
Hammersmith said York Township volunteer coordinator Kristen Tooney presented on senior activities and volunteer recruitment, and that the discussion included how to engage retirees and students in local programming. She highlighted committee conversations about holiday observances and the history and budget context for holiday lights on Main Street, and described proposals to use decorative lighting, murals and a fire-hydrant-painting program to promote community visibility.
"It was like I got a sip of something I didn't know I needed, and I just felt better," Hammersmith said, describing the energy at the meeting. She encouraged residents to consult committee minutes posted on the village website for details.
President Puccio introduced the report from the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission, and the clerk said the commission reviewed its 2025 annual report and 2026 budget worksheet and highlighted a proposal for signage on the Great Western Trail.
Hammersmith also noted local interest in youth and adult soccer programming and praised the village website and social media for improving resident outreach. No formal board action was taken on the committee reports during the public meeting; the items were informational.
