Trustee recommends parking restrictions near high school; board hears traffic analytics demo

The Village of Lombard’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted unanimously to recommend new parking restrictions on Lincoln Avenue and Elizabeth Street, north of Graham Avenue, after officials said parked vehicles often reduce the streets to a single lane and can slow emergency response.

“Due to parking congestion, these streets are often reduced to single lane traffic, which negatively impacts the ability of emergency vehicles, particularly fire equipment, to pass through the area,” Trustee Dudek said, explaining the committee’s rationale and its unanimous recommendation to the board.

The committee also received update reports from the fire and police departments and a demonstration of a new transportation analytics platform that uses real‑time and historical data to show vehicle volumes, speeds and travel times without installing new sensors. Trustee Dudek said the platform can produce before‑and‑after analysis of signal timing changes, construction or special events in hours rather than weeks.

Supporters said the tool could help the village monitor high‑volume or high‑speed locations and make faster, data‑driven traffic and safety decisions while saving staff time and consulting costs. The committee’s recommendation on the parking restrictions will be presented to the full Village Board when the item returns for formal consideration.

No formal board vote on the parking changes occurred at this meeting; the committee’s recommendation was reported to the board.
