Mount Prospect approves 10-year extension with Republic Services at modest rate rise

The Mount Prospect Village Board voted unanimously on Feb. 17 to approve a proposed 10-year extension of its solid-waste franchise with Republic Services, advancing a contract that would run Jan. 1, 2027, through Dec. 31, 2036.
Sean Dorsey, the village's head of public works, told the board the negotiated contract maintains weekly refuse and recycling, organics collection, automated cart service, unlimited refuse and bulk collection, white-goods and special collections and free holiday-tree pickup. "Our proposed rate in Mount Prospect for single-family households is $13.31 per month," Dorsey said, adding that the current rate is $12.95. He described the village's single-family rates as "still well below" most comparable communities in the North Cook County Swank consortium.
Dorsey said the contract includes an optional household-hazardous-waste curbside pickup priced at an additional $2.50 per household per month; staff did not recommend adding that option because the village already operates two free household hazardous waste events each year and budgets roughly $100,000 annually for those events. "We spend about $100,000 per year on those two events," Dorsey said, and residents also have access to drop-off locations and a state paint-care program that reduces local costs for paint recycling.
The agreement would index annual rate adjustments to the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin (all urban) Consumer Price Index, subject to a 2.5% minimum collar, Dorsey said. He recommended the negotiated extension on the grounds of competitive rates, local service continuity and the presence of Republic's local facility and drivers serving Mount Prospect.
Trustees pressed staff on operational details: whether downtown trash containers could be increased for busy summer weekends, how schools are contacted about recycling programs, and whether commercial accounts are served under the exclusive franchise. Dorsey said adding containers and targeted outreach were potential solutions and noted many local multifamily and commercial arrangements are billed by container size and frequency.
The board recorded roll-call votes in which all trustees present voted aye and the extension was approved.
The contract period begins Jan. 1, 2027, and ends Dec. 31, 2036. The village will continue to operate its two annual household hazardous waste events and maintain existing recycling drop-off options.
