Mundelein earns Bird City Illinois designation from Audubon

Mundelein was named a Bird City Illinois community during the Village Board meeting on Jan. 12, when representatives of the Audubon Council of Illinois presented a certificate and signage recognizing the village’s conservation work.
Jennifer Bridal, president of the Audubon Council of Illinois, told trustees the Bird City Illinois program—modeled on a successful Wisconsin initiative—recognizes municipalities that meet criteria for bird protection, education and habitat conservation. Bridal said the program requires communities to meet at least nine criteria and praised Mundelein for public education on bird collisions and for hosting World Migratory Bird Day events.
The designation includes a certificate and two signs for placement in the community; Bridal said graphics to reproduce additional signs are available through the Bird City Illinois website. The chair invited members of the village beautification committee who worked on the effort to join the presentation for a photograph.
The board did not take formal action beyond accepting the recognition. The village now appears on the Bird City Illinois roster, which the Audubon representatives said lists other recognized municipalities across the state.
