Geneva High RoboVikes honored; mentor Ken Wilson receives Woody Flowers Award

The Geneva High School RoboVikes robotics team stood before the Geneva CUSD 304 board on May 11 to receive Viking Leaders awards and recognition for competition and community outreach. Mister Rogers introduced the students and their mentors and called out the team’s international competition experience.
Mister Rogers said the group “literally build a robot every year, and it works,” and noted the team competed in two Illinois tournaments that he described as “among the toughest in the world.” He told the board the team’s success included being able, for the first time this year, to scout and select other teams for playoff alliances.
Mister Rogers also noted awards for the team’s mentors. “Mister Ken Wilson was nominated by one of the members of our team this year to receive the Woody Flowers Award,” he said, and the board congratulated Wilson for that recognition.
The presenter described the RoboVikes’ community efforts, including demonstrations at the Geneva Commons during the school’s 150th celebration and visits to middle-school classes to help recruit and mentor younger students. He added the team raises funds to support travel and competition costs.
A meeting participant announced a fundraiser for the RoboVikes at the Chipotle in St. Charles from 5 to 9 p.m. the following day, asking customers to mention the robotics team when ordering. The board and superintendent encouraged community support.
The recognition concluded with photographs of the students and mentors; the board then moved on to the rest of the evening’s agenda.
