Economic Development Commission to sunset April 30; members urge staff to plan transition of programs

Mike Decker, chair of the Economic Development Commission (EDC), reviewed the commission’s origin in a 1994 ordinance, its 2008 name change and told the board the EDC is scheduled to sunset on April 30. “The EDC, as we call it, will sunset on April 30,” Decker said, and he urged staff and the board to identify administrative homes for programs the EDC currently runs.
Decker summarized 2025 outreach: a business appreciation breakfast with 97 attendees representing 49 businesses, summer and fall mixers, tabling at the farmers market and Grand Prix, and frequent individual business outreach. He described the EDC’s vacancy-data collection and a micro-shop retail incubator project that is expected to continue beyond the commission.
On grant programs, Decker noted three STAR grants approved this year (Smoke and Barbecue, Mount Arra, Nova Dental Care), a chamber-membership grant that paid first-year chamber dues for a new business and Gold Star Awards that recognize local businesses. He said that continuing these programs after the EDC sunsets will require staff to reassign responsibilities or adopt new processes.
