District seeks to add 1 FTE transitional bilingual education teacher at Manuka Junior High

"Once you hit 20 students or more in 1 particular language, you need to have a TBE or a transitional bilingual education teacher, and that's the that's where we find ourselves at Manuka Junior High at this point in time," Dr. Massey said.
Board members asked whether this represents a new position at the junior high; district staff clarified the role would add capacity at the junior high (they currently have one multilingual teacher there and are adding another FTE). Dr. Massey said the district has tried to recruit in prior years and noted the candidate pool is small; an HR referral of a potentially endorsed candidate was mentioned and staff said they will reach out.
The board was told the request is preliminary and that further staffing requests will be brought back in March with additional enrollment and budget projection context. No formal vote to create or fund the position was recorded during the public portion of the meeting; the item was presented for awareness and initial approval of the recommendation process.
