Education Foundation highlights fundraising, teacher grants and volunteer needs

At the April 13 meeting, the District 58 Education Foundation presented its annual update, reporting more than $2.5 million raised over 20 years and nearly $175,000 raised in the most recent year.
Janet Alikpal, the foundation’s president, said fundraising supports eight signature programs including teacher grants, reading games and author festivals. "Last year alone, we've raised nearly a $175,000," Alikpal said.
Foundation treasurer David Olson described flagship events that produce the majority of funds — the annual Oktoberfest (more than 2,500 wristbands sold last year) and the Grove Express run (nearly 7,000 participants that produced over $200,000 in proceeds, with roughly $37,000 allocated to the foundation). Leaders said 17 teacher grants this year delivered more than $33,000 directly to teacher projects across district schools.
Foundation leaders also asked for new volunteer interest and invited people to consider board service to maintain momentum as long-serving volunteers step back. The board thanked foundation representatives and the district for partnership.
