Engineering supervisor discusses Bike Month efforts, safety and how the city adds bike lanes

Lydia McIntyre, identified on the program as an engineering supervisor with the Transportation and Planning Department, said the city coordinates resurfacing schedules with bicycle-accommodation planning and works with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to prioritize lanes and routes.
"We look at resurfacing and we look at resurfacing to determine how we can coordinate those," McIntyre said, explaining staff share upcoming roads for resurfacing with the advisory committee and then assess whether to add bike lanes, buffered lanes or other accommodations.
McIntyre said the department pursues NCDOT funding to implement projects and that when project teams plan work they consider opportunities for separated bike lanes and greenway extensions. On safety, she said, "Bicycles are vehicles. They have the right to use the road," and urged drivers to slow down, give cyclists room and avoid parking in bike lanes so cyclists can travel safely.
The interview was presented as part of Bike Month programming; McIntyre highlighted the Downtown Greenway and the city’s Safe Routes to School education efforts for K–12 students. She encouraged residents to consult the city’s online bicycle map for locations of lanes, sharrows and greenways.
