Kurt Price, commander of American Legion Post 21 in Downey, briefed commissioners on the post’s veterans‑oriented activities and building needs and asked for a modest county contribution.
“We started out Thursday and placed grave marker flags on all the veterans graves in four different cemeteries,” Price said, outlining ceremonies, firing teams and outreach the post provides. He described water damage and floor repairs under way in the post’s older CCC‑era building and said the post is seeking grant assistance for upkeep.
Price said membership has declined and volunteers are aging; the post relies on donations and fundraisers and uses county support strictly for the building’s upkeep. He identified Dana Evans as the adjutant who prepared the budget the commissioners received.
Price thanked the commissioners and noted past city support — the city of Downey waived water fees and the post coordinates trash services with a nearby church — and requested approximately $2,500 in county support for the coming year. The commissioners thanked him for his service and for the post’s community work.
