Byram pauses dog park plan at CO Johnson Park after NJDEP habitat concern; to rebid field-light project

The Byram Township Council confirmed it will not proceed with a proposed dog park at CO Johnson Park after NJDEP requirements indicated the property must be identified as copperhead habitat. Township Manager Joseph Sabatini told the council that, because of those environmental constraints, the council would not pursue a small parking area on the dog-park side either.
Sabatini said he will work to relocate impervious coverage to the field side and to move the Roseville Road trailhead across from the access to the upper parking lot. He told the council the township did not receive a Local Recreation Improvement Grant to replace field lights; the council authorized him to work with Township Engineer Cory Stoner to prepare bid documents for the light-replacement project, which the council intends to fund through the Open Space Trust.
Council members also discussed replacing the aging announcer booth; staff were directed to collaborate on a design and estimate for a possible new stick-built structure with upstairs announcer space and downstairs storage. The council did not take further binding action beyond directing staff to prepare plans, estimates and bid documents.
