Michelle Weidner, Black Hawk County finance director, told the Board of Supervisors during a May 19 briefing that property tax legislation signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds "appears to significantly reduce county funding for Fiscal Year 2028," and that the county needs further detail to quantify the impact.
Weidner delivered the update as part of department head reports, alongside an engineering update on road projects and a parks-and-trails status report. She did not provide a dollar estimate at the meeting and said more information is needed before the county can determine the precise fiscal effect.
The board discussed the item as part of routine departmental updates; the county will monitor implementing guidance and forthcoming detail from state sources. The Iowa State Association of Counties is planning training in July related to the new property tax law, the board noted during the legislative update.
The board did not take action at the May 19 meeting; staff and supervisors indicated they will await additional information before proposing budget changes or formal positions.
