La Mesa council asks staff to study low-cost downtown parking changes including golf-cart spaces

La Mesa’s City Council unanimously directed staff May 26 to analyze a package of low-cost downtown parking modifications aimed at adding short-term customer spaces and improving parking efficiency in the La Mesa Village.
Councilmember Lothian, who presented the ideas with Vice Mayor Cazares, outlined five near-term measures she said could yield “anywhere from 20 to 100” parking spaces without building a structure. Her suggestions included reducing a red curb outside Coin House to the legally required minimum, converting the passenger loading zone at 4719 Palm Avenue to metered parking, creating designated golf-cart and motorcycle parking (with pavement stencils) and relocating bike racks to open triangular spaces, installing painted parking "tees" to improve alignment and efficiency, and converting a triangular dirt median behind Pete’s Restaurant to customer parking with a replacement-tree plan.
Ryan Ebenhauer, a La Mesa resident and financial advisor with a business in the village, praised the proposals and said, “More accessible parking means more customers, longer visits and stronger businesses,” urging the council to pursue the ideas.
Councilmember Suzuki raised concerns about preserving bike racks and maintaining some loading zones for people with mobility needs. The motion directed staff to analyze feasibility and implementation and return findings and recommendations within 60 days. The motion passed unanimously.
