Cathedral City arts commission recommends 'Crimson Sentinel' for Esperanza Park

The Cathedral City Special Public Arts Commission voted May 26 to recommend Crimson Sentinel, a sculpture by CJ Wrench, for installation at Esperanza Park and will forward that recommendation to the City Council.
A staff member told commissioners that when preparing the staff report staff discovered "a body of community input that was missed from the initial evaluation," a survey of Agua Caliente School students whose 385 responses included 164 votes for Esperanza Rising. Staff also presented an online engagement (532 votes) that favored Flower of Esperanza and neighborhood outreach (29 votes) that favored Crimson Sentinel, and said Public Works had reviewed each submission for structural integrity and maintainability.
Commissioner Stouder said he preferred Crimson Sentinel for its scale and daily impact. "I really like the one that we chose, Crimson Sentinel. I thought that was a good choice," he said. Commissioner Marks said he was surprised by the student results and recalled concerns about the timeline for other pieces: "I was really settled on our choice from last month... I remember it was going to be, like, a year and a half before it would be completed," and added that "Crimson Sentinel would probably be done by the end of this year." The staff member noted Public Works had flagged the mosaic design as having the highest maintenance concern.
After brief discussion about vote differentials and daytime versus nighttime impact, Commissioner Stouder moved that the commission recommend Crimson Sentinel to the City Council. "I move that we recommend Crimson Sentinel as the piece for Esperanza park and that that recommendation be forwarded to the city council," he said. Commissioner Marks seconded and the chair announced the motion carried. The clerk recorded verbal votes and declared the motion carried; the commission did not delay for further public comment at the special meeting.
The recommendation will be placed on a future City Council agenda for final approval. The commission adjourned immediately after the vote.
