Lowndes County Board authorizes quarterly budgets including sheriff and detention

The Lowndes County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 5 unanimously approved quarterly budget authorizations for several county offices, including a $1,980,987.75 appropriation for the sheriff’s department and $1,214,112.75 for adult detention.
County Administrator Jay Fisher presented the request and Supervisor Trip Hairston moved “to spread on the minutes, in accordance with Mississippi Code Section 27-1-9(c) (Tax Assessor), authorize the request to appropriate a quarter of Tax Assessor's budget $108,667.25; Tax Collector's budget $243,830.50, Sheriff's Department $1,980,987.75, and Adult Detention $1,214,112.75.” Supervisor Jeff Smith seconded the motion and the board voted 5-0 to approve it.
The action covers routine quarterly appropriations; the board tied the step to state code language cited during the motion. No amendments or dissent were recorded during the discussion.
The board also separately authorized advertising for plumbing bids at the Adult Detention Center later in the meeting (see separate item), which would be funded from existing departmental appropriations when contracts are awarded. The board recessed the meeting and will reconvene on Jan. 15, 2026.
