Wellington EDC refines business survey, seeks actionable questions and outreach plan

Commission members said the draft needs to ask about taxes and tax rates, whether businesses know about EDC services and where they would seek government help, and — most importantly — include questions that produce actionable data the commission can use. "The major, the taxes was missing from it," a commission member said, urging that tax rates be added. Clark said he would forward three specific suggestions he had sketched and asked staff to circulate the draft to the group.
Joan, a commission member, said she had deleted recent emails and needed the questionnaire resent. She also asked whether stabilization measures must go to a referendum; another participant replied, "town meeting," clarifying the forum for such a vote.
Members described the draft as broadly useful but urged precision so results could lead to concrete steps. "I wanted to have... actionable data," Clark said, noting the EDC should be able to follow up on survey findings. Commissioners agreed to treat the survey as a continuing agenda item and asked staff to distribute the draft and related materials before the next meeting.
The commission recommended combining survey planning with outreach: review the existing Willington Development Guide on the town website, assemble the content the town must present to prospective companies, and consider online listing options such as the state—s certified sites initiative. Clark said he would email a link to the development guide and share criteria for certified sites so members can prepare for the next meeting.
The meeting was open to the public online; participants were invited to submit further suggestions by email. The commission plans to review updated survey questions and outreach materials at its next scheduled session.
