Willington selectmen correct school building committee appointment, elevate Peter Bacon to full member

The Willington Board of Selectmen voted on March 16 to correct a previous appointment to the school building committee, elevating Peter Bacon from an alternate to a regular voting member and reappointing John Teehan as an alternate, First Selectman Mike McCoux said.

McCoux told the board that the change reflects what “probably how it should have happened in the first place,” and that both Bacon and Teehan were in agreement with the switch. McCoux moved the change and a board member seconded; the motion carried by voice vote. McCoux said the appointees do not need to be re‑sworn and that he would notify the town clerk the following day to update the committee listing.

Board members discussed whether such membership and role changes fall within the selectmen’s authority. McCoux reviewed how the initial appointments had been made — distinguishing full members from alternates and naming two nonvoting appointees — and said the selectmen are authorized to appoint committee members. A board member cited the DEAS rules while discussing the committee-formation process; McCoux said the proposed correction fits with the town’s charge to appoint members and correct administrative errors.

The vote resolved the procedural question so the school building committee can proceed with its schedule. The selectmen moved on to other agenda items after the motion passed.
