Lower Marion honors veteran Chief Daniel Kincaid and awards life‑saving citations to local firefighters

The Lower Marion Township Board of Commissioners on Jan. 21 recognized volunteer and career firefighters for years of service, a life‑saving intervention and a building‑fire rescue that led to a unit citation.
Chief Daniel Kincaid of the Bryn Mawr Fire Company was honored with an official proclamation recognizing a 50‑year career in the fire service and 16 years as chief. The proclamation, read aloud by a board member, cited more than 14,000 calls and Kincaid’s roles as secretary of the board, assistant and deputy chief before becoming chief. In brief remarks Kincaid thanked family and colleagues, noting the personal sacrifices of the job.
The board awarded a unit citation to the Marion Fire Company of Ardmore for its June 23, 2025 response to a fire at the Oakland House, a seven‑story residential building in Wynwood. According to the citation presented at the meeting, Chief Tom Hayden and crews entered under moderate smoke, conducted simultaneous left‑and‑right searches because of a confirmed life hazard, and located a semi‑conscious resident who was carried to awaiting EMS and transported to the hospital. The citation text read in part that the crews’ “decisive action and teamwork exemplify the professionalism and dedication of the Lower Marion Fire Department.”
The board also presented a merit award to Firefighter Doug Watkins (Bryn Mawr Fire Company) for performing the Heimlich maneuver on Nov. 6, 2025, dislodging an obstructing object and restoring the person’s airway before EMS arrival. The award commended Watkins for calm, decisive action and training‑driven response that prevented a potentially life‑threatening outcome.
Commissioners used the session to spotlight the township’s volunteer fire companies and training: chiefs read rosters from several companies and the board noted roughly 16,000 hours of certification training across companies during the previous five years. Commissioners said they will photograph recognized members and continue an annual January spotlight on fire service personnel.
The presentations closed with commissioners thanking volunteers for community service and urging continued training and safety.
