Council members used the meeting's summary-of-current-events portion to promote upcoming community programs and to ask residents to volunteer for boards.
Vice Mayor Coates described the Verde Valley Wine Festival and promoted the first Cottonwood Police Teen Academy: "This academy is four days from July 6th through the 9th at the Cottonwood Police Station. This is a hands on program providing high school students with an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of police, including patrol tactics, 911 communication, canine work and much more. And it is also free." Staff also announced Operation Graduation scheduled for May 22, the Cottonwood Aquatic Center outdoor pool opening on Memorial Day (May 25) and a community bike ride with the mayor on May 30. The city will host an American Red Cross blood drive on June 9 offering a $15 gift card for donors and entries to prize drawings.
Vice Mayor Coates and staff additionally noted a canceled Board of Adjustment meeting due to lack of quorum and urged residents to consider applying for open positions on the Board of Adjustment and the Planning and Zoning Commission.
These announcements were presented as informational items; no formal council action was taken on the events or recruitment at the May 19 meeting.
