State Sen. Sam Gaban presented a legislative discretionary check for $100,000 to the Madison County Board of Education during the board's May 14 meeting and outlined specific local allocations.
"We have a special allocation to the Career technical center of 19,000," Gaban said, adding detailed allotments: "$20,000 for the Hazel Green weight room, $10,000 for deferred maintenance at Madison County High, and $30,000 for the Sparkman High School deferred maintenance and parking lot." He said the total check to the board was $100,000 and indicated another round of funding will supplement district needs.
Board members thanked the senator and noted past discretionary support, including a playground provided to Spartan Intermediate School "at no cost to the district," which the board said was funded through prior discretionary allocations. Several board members commented that continued population growth is placing pressure on local schools and infrastructure.
The check presentation was followed by district highlights and routine business on the agenda.
