Vestavia Hills board honors Jay Stewart; Jonathan Handy nominated as next president

Mayor Ashley Curry presented the certificate on behalf of the city, praising the board–city partnership and saying the school system is the “number one reason people move to [Vestavia Hills].” Jay Stewart responded with remarks about the school system’s history and the community collaboration he credited for local success.
Multiple board members and community speakers offered personal tributes. One member said Stewart had provided “vision for our school system and its students,” and others described Stewart as a mentor and friend who strengthened ties between the schools and city government.
During the business portion, a board member moved to nominate Jonathan Handy as president for the upcoming school year; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The board also entertained motions to nominate a vice president for 2026–27.
The meeting closed with continued expressions of gratitude for Stewart’s leadership and the board’s commitment to continuity as new officers assume their roles.
