The Rockingham County Board of Education on March 9 approved the districts FY27 capital budget and authorized limited flexibility to use zonal restricted sales tax for technology purchases.
Finance staff asked for approval of a $5,950,000 FY27 capital budget as part of the districts five‑year plan and requested that the board permit the superintendent to use up to $1.2 million of previously approved zonal dedicated sales tax (2526 restricted sales tax) to purchase student and staff computers. Staff said the request was time sensitive because a vendor's quoted price was expected to increase after a date in March. "If we can work that out with the county, we won't have to come back to you again," a finance presenter said.
The board approved the capital budget and the requested flexibility after a motion and a second. Finance staff also summarized operating budget drivers and said the district plans to request $27 million in local funding from Rockingham County; presenters noted DPI published planning allotments and estimated an approximately $3 million reduction in state funding for the coming year, including a $1.6 million reduction in a specific allotment.
Next steps: the finance committee will meet March 16 and staff plan to present the proposed budget to the board at the March 23 work session so it can be forwarded to county commissioners by March 24.
