Giles County planning commission advances subdivision standard revisions; fee schedule left for later

The Giles County Regional Planning Commission advanced revisions to the county’s subdivision standards at its March meeting, approving updates to developer-notification requirements and several technical code provisions while leaving further fee-schedule work for a later date.

Commissioners debated the structure of application fees, with some members raising concerns that per-lot fees could be unfair to small developers. County Executive Graham Stowe told the commission the intent behind the change was to ensure development-related costs “were covered by the developers rather than taxpayers,” according to the program’s report of the meeting.

Suggestions during the discussion included simplifying the fee structure by replacing per-lot charges with a higher flat application fee. After the exchange the commission voted to advance the text of the code revisions but made approval contingent on additional adjustments to the fee schedule.

The action means the commission has cleared the substantive code language and will return to finalize the numeric fee amounts and schedule before the changes become effective. No motion maker, second, or formal roll-call vote totals were reported in the on-air summary of the meeting.
