Daly City libraries add radon monitors, plan wheelchair charging stations and finish facility upgrades

Daly City library staff told trustees March 17 that the libraries will add digital radon monitors obtained at no cost from the California Department of Public Health and will pilot wheelchair charging stations at the main branch as part of a broader accessibility and facilities-improvement effort.
Staff said two radon monitors will be placed at each of the city’s four library locations and that the devices are intended for homeowner informational use; each package will include a disclaimer noting the library does not calibrate the units. "They're for informational use and we're not able to guarantee the accuracy," staff said in explaining the program and the included links to Department of Public Health information.
The board also heard about a purchased charging station to power electric wheelchairs and mobility devices. Staff said ADA and site constraints (including a recommended 60-inch turning radius and available power) mean some locations will host stationary units while others might use a mobile stand to provide flexibility. The staff member emphasized that the station is intended to increase patrons' independence and access.
On facilities, staff updated trustees on work at the main library: lighting fixtures and controls remain to be installed, sprinkler replacements have been completed, framing to create a community room should be finished by the end of April, and the replacement elevator is on order with an anticipated late-summer arrival.
