Representative Busby urges state international trade commission with volunteer subcommittees

During consideration of several bills for final action, Representative Busby said she supported the measures but urged the Commerce Committee to consider establishing a standing international trade commission for Connecticut, staffed in part by volunteer subcommittees that might help raise funds and sustain work.
"I'd like to recommend that while I am going to support these bills, that we consider an international trade commission for the state with subcommittees, with volunteers from different communities to be involved in this for us going forward," Representative Busby said. She asked that the committee charge itself with leading that effort in the next year.
Senator Martin responded that the idea had merit but would require coordination: "I do want to make sure that it's coordinated with DECD, but certainly and imperatively on the legislative side with the Commerce Committee," he said, adding he expected "somewhere between 80 and 90%" of the commission's opportunity space to be commercial trade. No formal motion or vote on creating such a commission occurred during the meeting; Senator Martin said the proposal would be an ongoing issue for future consideration.
