Board approves 2026–27 school calendar, tables 2027–28 major breaks after debate over moving fall break

The Oldham County Board of Education voted on March 23 to approve the 2026–27 school calendar and to table the 2027–28 major-break schedule after trustees requested more community input about a proposed change to fall break timing.
Staff explained the calendar committee recommended moving fall break up one week because the state’s college-admissions testing program has shifted from administering the ACT in October to the SAT in the spring, which removed the previous scheduling constraint. "We moved it up one week also to allow for more time between fall break and then election and then bam, we're out for Thanksgiving," the staff representative said, describing the committee’s reasoning.
Several trustees said the change is substantial and that more parent feedback or a wider survey would be appropriate before making a multi-year scheduling decision. "That's a big change that I feel like we need to get a little more feedback on," one trustee said.
To preserve continuity while gathering input, the board split the action: it approved the 2026–27 calendar and tabled the 2027–28 major-break proposal for further consideration. The motion to approve the 2026–27 calendar and table the 2027–28 major breaks passed unanimously, 5–0; trustees asked staff to share staff-survey results and to consider a parent survey before the board reconsiders the FY28 breaks.
