Board hears progress reports on South Odom High, Oldham County High and Buckner construction projects

Contractors and facilities staff updated the Oldham County Board of Education on multiple school construction projects at the March 23 meeting, saying several major pieces are in place and that project phasing is under active management.
Cameron Mathis, project manager for Weir Construction, described phase one of South Odom High School as a 38,000-square-foot, 22-classroom addition with foundations and the first course of CMU block completed. "We're ahead of schedule as of now," Mathis said, noting the team prioritized stairwell construction to meet egress requirements and planned a turnover of phase one in July ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
Mathis also described interior renovation progress: first-floor mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are complete and tile work has begun in restrooms. The junior parking area is being expanded from about 118 spots to roughly 140 using permeable pavers to meet stormwater requirements.
Brent, the district facilities staff member leading construction oversight, told trustees that a large deductive change order on the South Odom project resulted from coordinated direct purchasing and work with design partners, returning money to the project for future phases. "We were able to have a significant tax saving by doing direct purchase for a lot of materials," Brent said.
Architect Matthew Harris of Studio Kramer reviewed recent progress at Oldham County High School and Buckner, including placement of precast concrete panels, emerging gymnasium lobby and concessions areas, and slab work for the Buckner second floor. Harris said site surveys are ongoing to assess feasibility for additional off-campus athletics space, and staff cautioned heavy grading and topography present challenges.
Several consent items related to facilities—BG1 authorizations, demolition of condemned structures, a revised contract award for elementary site and playground work, BG4 closeout for restrooms, and change orders for South Odom—were included in the consent agenda and approved by the board.
