Northern Cambria board: nearly $2.4M state subsidy incoming; $1M set aside for investment

A staff member told the Northern Cambria School Board on Feb. 17 that the district is set to receive "almost $2.4 million" in state subsidy on Feb. 26 and that the board plans to set aside $1 million of that amount for investment.

The staff member said district leaders expect to place the $1 million into an investment vehicle they called "plig it," with an anticipated return of about 3.7% monthly. The board was also told that Ready-to-Learn block grant applications were completed and that the district is set to receive "a little over a million dollars" to be used or reimbursed for the 2025–26 school year.

Why it matters: The subsidy and block grant money will feed into the district’s operating and program budgets as administrators prepare initial budget drafts for board review. The staff member noted the timing is important because the district’s bills are higher than usual this month due to debt-service payments due March 1.

Board members asked about the timing and uses for capital items mentioned in the finance update. The staff member said dust collectors are expected on site the first week of March and that blinds for the new high school have been ordered and should be installed within about two weeks, pending vendor confirmation.

The staff member summarized ongoing budget work: "Budgetary processes have begun. Faculty began working on their budgets," and said athletics had submitted a preliminary budget. The report closed with an offer for board members and the public to contact building administrators with questions.

What’s next: The staff member said they will present an initial budget for the board to review this month and reiterated that the district will confirm exact uses for the Ready-to-Learn funds in collaboration with principals and other staff.
