State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver visited Ocean Bay Middle School and the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology (AAST) in Horry County to observe classrooms and meet students, saying the visits gave her "incredible hope for the future."
Weaver, who described classroom visits as "the highlight and the greatest joy of this job," told teachers and students she was struck by a focus on foundational skills, especially writing and speaking, which she tied to success "in whatever career pathway you take."
The visit included a stop at Ocean Bay Middle, where student leader Abby — introduced in the session as Ocean Bay Middle student body vice president and South Carolina Association of Student Council second vice president — said she was "really so excited to meet everybody" and proud to represent her school. Abby told visitors the school community works together to keep the building welcoming and to support events and student collaboration.
A teacher at Ocean Bay told the superintendent that the school has a reading initiative and emphasized the district's belief that a quality education is central to students' long-term success. A local staff member characterized the Ocean Bay visit as "very productive, very informative," and reiterated that "kids first" guided the room-to-room tour.
At AAST, a student panel representing the school's majors described the academy as inclusive and offering a wide variety of learning experiences. One panelist called Weaver's visit "truly an honor," saying leaders at the state, district and school levels share the goal of preparing students to be college- and career-ready.
Weaver closed the visits by praising the students' articulation and preparedness and by noting how classroom learning connected to real-world applications, a theme she said gave her optimism about the future of education in the district.
