Union County honors student winners at Arbor Day poetry presentation

The Board of County Commissioners opened its agenda-setting session by recognizing students who won the Union County Arbor Day Poetry Contest and asking winners to read their poems aloud.
Chairman Bodick announced the contest and invited Commissioner Lourdes Leone, liaison to the Shade Tree Advisory Board, to join him in presenting awards. Commissioner Leone said the contest "is a great reminder that trees are just something we pass by every day" and praised the students for encouraging environmental stewardship.
The board announced winners across grades 4 through 8 and asked several students to recite their poems. Among those named by the board were Rhea Marta (grade 4, third place), Eileen Crawford (grade 4, second place), Finley A. Miller (grade 4, first place), and Leah Marshall (grade 6, first place). Several students read poems that celebrated trees' benefits, including shade, cleaner air and habitat for wildlife.
The chair said each winning poem has been printed and "is currently displayed in the meeting room hallway." The presentations lasted several minutes, drew praise from commissioners and closed with the board congratulating the students.
The Arbor Day recognition occupied the beginning of the meeting; the board then moved on to routine departmental presentations and resolutions.
