Buchanan board approves calendar changes, staff stipend and routine personnel actions

The Buchanan Community Schools Board of Education on April 20, 2026 approved several routine but consequential items: a calendar amendment that changes the May 18 meeting start time to 6:00 p.m. and relocates several meetings to the high school library, a letter-of-agreement stipend for band director Matthew Orslow, certification of two virtual-academy graduates, and a consent agenda that included coaching hires and staff resignations.
During the meeting the board heard a bond oversight and facilities update: architect/engineering RFPs are being prepared (staff reported Scott is working with Troon) and bids are due at the end of the month; window-covering work is expected to finish in late May or early June with contractors likely to be approved at the next meeting. The human-resources committee reported it will launch an employee-referral program, reviewed a draft vacation-day rollover policy for some positions, and noted two custodian resignations and open vacancies including custodial and substitute bus-driver positions.
On the consent agenda, the board approved the March 16, 2026 minutes, coaching hires (Dedrick Ackerson for JV baseball assistant and Justin Berry for 6th–8th girls track coach), and acknowledged resignations (Tyler Pullins and David Griswold). Ms. Barry stated she would abstain from the consent vote based on a relationship; the consent agenda otherwise passed by roll call.
The board also certified that two virtual academy students met district requirements for graduation and approved the 2026 calendar amendments, which included moving summer meeting locations to the high school library after installation of air conditioning funded from sinking-fund dollars. The board approved a letter of agreement providing a stipend for additional hours worked by band director Matthew Orslow, citing growth in the band program and added duties such as pep band appearances; the motion passed by roll call.
All votes on the graduation certification, calendar amendment and the band-director stipend were recorded as approved by the members present. The board recessed into closed session for a student-discipline hearing and later returned to adopt a related resolution in open session (see separate item). The board adjourned at 7:30 p.m. and set its next meeting for May 18, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
