Neighbors urge halt to Philippi landfill; commissioners say state issued roadway permit

Several residents told the board they oppose the Philippi LCID landfill proposed at 4115 Clap Mill Road, saying trucks, ash and noise are affecting nearby neighborhoods and that parts of the operation appear to be running before full local approvals.
"This site is not legally permitted yet, but yet this site is in full illegal LCID operation," Leslie Claire told commissioners, citing photographs of tri-axle dump trucks bringing material from nearby cities into the site.
Alan Figgis echoed the concern, saying the county already has multiple landfills within a short radius and urging commissioners not to allow Alamance County to become a regional dumping ground.
Commissioners responded that while they are actively looking into the matter, a permit affecting the roadway link to Flat Mill Road was issued by the state Department of Transportation, not the county. The board also said some permits related to the site come through other state agencies and that commissioners would review what county-level authority remains.
Commissioners encouraged residents to continue submitting evidence and said they are monitoring planning and legal processes before taking any formal local action.
