Council names complex 'Tracy Pioneer Sports Complex,' agrees to public process to name ballfields

Brian McDonald, Parks Recreation and Community Services Director, told the council the Parks & Community Services Commission ranked the naming options and recommended “Tracy Pioneer Sports Complex” as its top choice. Several speakers representing the Pioneer Soccer Club and other longtime mentors urged the council to select a name that recognizes the collective contributions of coaches, volunteers and families that built youth sports in Tracy.
Public commenters named several local figures they said helped found or sustain youth soccer, softball and baseball programs. “Naming the park to Tracy Pioneer Sports Complex will be a fitting tribute to those who worked tirelessly to build strong community generations,” one speaker said. Multiple speakers suggested reserving individual field or diamond names for specific local leaders; others proposed naming some fields after former Mayor Brent Ives.
Council members thanked speakers for the history lesson and unanimously adopted the commission’s top recommendation to change the complex name to Tracy Pioneer Sports Complex. On a separate noticed item, council considered naming individual ballfields after Brent Ives but — after public pushback and a brief appearance by Mr. Ives — voted instead to deny staff’s single‑name recommendation and direct staff to open the regular public naming process for the four ballfields so members of the public can submit names for each field. Council directed staff to involve the Parks Commission and provide public outreach and recommendations back to council.
The decision preserves the existing soccer‑field dedication (1965 Pioneer Soccer Club Fields) and initiates a new public process to nominate and select four field names.
