Kyrene board adopts parent/legal-guardian and patriotic-exercises policies; recognizes KEA officers

The Kyrene Governing Board voted unanimously to adopt two policies on their second readings and used the regular meeting to recognize newly elected Kyrene Education Association officers.
At the second read of Policy 1.401 (Parents/legal guardian rights and education), district counsel Mr. Ll told the board the policy was revised to add language mirroring statutory language related to health assistance certification: "That mirrors the statutory language in 15.160.04," he said. The motion to adopt Policy 1.401 carried on a 5'0to'00 voice vote after a motion by Member Kevin Walsh and a second by Member Bunny Davis.
On Policy 5.201 (Patriotic exercises and observance days), Mr. Ll said the revision adds language allowing a student or the student's parent to object to the Declaration of Independence recitation and prohibits retaliation against a student for objecting. The board approved Policy 5.201 on its second read by a unanimous voice vote.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved the evening's agenda (motion by Member Bunny Davis, second by Cedric Collins) and passed the consent agenda by voice vote. President Trina Nelson noted no in'person public comments (blue cards) had been submitted; public comment may still arrive electronically under board policy.
Superintendent Laura Tenez used her report to highlight district events and recognitions, including National Week of the Young Child programming, National Library Week acknowledgments, a Kyrene art show at the Chandler Public Library, Girls on the Run participation and student and staff awards at the Council for Exceptional Children ceremony. Tenez also introduced the KEA officer team for 2026''7: Delia Lighting (president), Mariah Monson and Katie Webb (co'vice presidents), Christina Ochoa (treasurer) and Jennifer Pooler Ludwig (secretary). Delia Lighting addressed the board about KEA's advocacy and member leadership.
The board then moved into and later concluded executive session and adjourned the meeting at 7:24 p.m.
