McGregor council accepts SpaceX influent delivery system, cites water-reuse benefits

The McGregor City Council voted April 13 to accept an influent delivery system from SpaceX as property of the city, a step city staff said will support reuse of nonpotable water and accommodate industrial growth.

City staff explained the agreement and told the council that SpaceX will sign the improvements over to the city and the city will assume maintenance responsibilities. A staff member said the system can support up to about 400,000 gallons a day in deliveries and that the city presently averages roughly 250,000 gallons a day; staff also described permit and treatment-capacity considerations the city must manage as demand grows. “It didn’t cost us anything,” the staff member said about the construction of the improvements as reported in the meeting.

The staff presentation noted the potential to reduce potable-water consumption by reusing wastewater, and that the city holds permits and timeframes for plant upgrades. Council members asked questions about current capacity and the punch-list; staff confirmed the punch-list was complete or being finalized before the acceptance.

Council member (speaker 5) moved to approve a resolution accepting the influent delivery system; another council member seconded the motion, and the council approved it by voice vote after no further discussion.

Next steps described by staff included finalizing any remaining punch-list items and formalizing the transfer of ownership; staff also confirmed the city will maintain the system going forward. The council took no additional formal conditions at the meeting.
