Public commenter urges more transparency on KQES governance; board says it will consider concerns

During the public comment period, Lawanda Travis asked the King and Queen County School Board to increase transparency and accountability around issues involving King and Queen Elementary School (KQES) and the relationship between the school board and the Board of Supervisors.
"I would like to make a request that we request the school board lawyer," Travis said, asking for a special meeting so the public could better understand the dynamics between the two bodies and how decisions about the schools are made. She framed the request in terms of community trust and said a dedicated meeting would help residents follow complex governance issues.
Board leadership acknowledged the comment and said the board would take the concern seriously and consider it for future action. Earlier in the meeting a staff member had noted that a steering committee met to discuss the older KQES building and that a letter from the Board of Supervisors had been circulated to board members about turning the old KQES property over to the county; the board said further discussion would follow in open session and later meetings.
The meeting closed without immediate policy action on governance; the board listed several upcoming action items (Student Code of Conduct, final Special Education Plan for Improvement and the CTE Perkins Plan) and adjourned.
